Some children in Slovakia have never been on a trip, never visited a cinema, a zoo, a swimming pool — or even had a cake in a café. Growing up in generational poverty, their parents often lack both the money and time to offer these experiences. Without positive role models or exposure to the world beyond their communities, it’s difficult for these children to imagine a different life.

For children from excluded communities even a simple outing can be transformative. Visiting the zoo, seeing a movie for the first time, or tasting their first ice cream outside the settlement — these aren’t just fun moments. They are windows into a world of possibility. On these trips, children not only enjoy themselves but learn important social skills: how to behave in public, how to communicate with others, how to feel comfortable in unfamiliar settings. Through play, exploration and shared joy, they begin to believe in a life beyond poverty. Sometimes, one small trip can be the first big step forward.
