A Goat as a Gift? Help a Poor Family Secure Their Livelihood

Are you thinking of giving an original gift? We have an idea that will bring joy to the recipient and help those in need at the same time. The Goat gift certificate is the most popular Real Gift in our range, and thanks to it, we have already donated hundreds of goats and other farm animals to impoverished families across Africa and Asia.

A goat provides meaningful, long-term support

In many parts of Africa and Asia, weather patterns are increasingly unpredictable, with droughts followed by floods — conditions worsened by climate change. Rural families, for whom agriculture is their main source of income, are especially vulnerable to these adverse weather events. A poor harvest or no harvest at all can lead to hunger, disease, and, in the worst cases, death.

The non-profit organization People in Peril focuses its aid programs on increasing food security and building sustainable farms. Our goal is to guide impoverished communities towards self-sufficiency and long-term livelihoods. One effective way to do this is by donating animals that will benefit families for many years.

Goats are hardy animals that provide nutritious milk for the entire family. They give birth to kids each year; over time, a single goat can grow into a herd that supports the whole community. Surplus milk can be sold at local markets, generating income that families can use to send children to school, buy other essentials, or invest back into their farms. Along with goats, we have also donated chickens, sheep, and cows.

Goats find the right owners

The goats are placed in the hands of families from the most vulnerable groups — single mothers, families with small children, and households caring for seriously ill or disadvantaged members. Each family receives training on proper animal care to ensure the goats thrive and provide maximum benefit.

During training, recipients learn about proper nutrition, common diseases affecting animals, and how to prevent them. The goats are already vaccinated, dewormed, and provided with initial feed. We source the animals directly from regions where our aid is active, ensuring they are adapted to local conditions and do not suffer long transportation.

Where have we already delivered animals?

Thanks to donations, we have supported families in Kenya's Rift Valley, Kivulini, and Kilifi County. In Myanmar, goats, sheep, chickens, and cows have gone to impoverished families in the villages of Na Gar Kywet and Zee Zar in the Mrauk U region. We have also assisted communities in the Kabarole district of western Uganda.

Leah Njeri, whom we donated a goat and chicks to in 2019, shares her experience:

“I milk about two liters of milk a day, which helps us a lot. I am very grateful that after the first kid died, twins were born at once. Now I am sure that the next kid will be mine.”

The families who receive these gifts often pass the first two goat kids to their neighbors to help build self-sufficiency across the community. Leah’s goats also provide her children with milk, which is vital for their nutrition. Leah is a mother of nine children, with the youngest four still in school.

With your help, we can support families in need

We aim to provide assistance as effectively as possible, taking into account the current needs of each community. When you purchase a 100% Goat gift certificate, your contribution supports aid programs in the LIVELIHOOD category, focused on securing sustainable livelihoods. The donations are used to buy farm animals for families. If, in a particular situation, another form of assistance would be more effective, the funds may be allocated to activities such as purchasing vegetable seedlings, legumes, trees, farming equipment, constructing beehives or greenhouses, or providing tools for small entrepreneurs.
