At People in Peril, we believe that education is the key to finding employment and breaking the cycle of intergenerational poverty. We are therefore especially pleased that this year, eleven of our scholarship recipients successfully completed their high school education. Several of them are the first people in their families to earn a vocational qualification or pass their high school graduation exam.
A Path Full of Obstacles
For children from marginalized communities, the path to education is often much more difficult. Completing elementary and secondary education cannot be taken for granted. Many lack the funds needed for school supplies, and commuting from remote villages can also be a major challenge. Some young people have to walk several kilometers to school. They often have no one to help them with their homework, as their parents may have completed only primary education.
When they experience being underestimated by those around them, exclusion from their peer groups, or bullying, their self-esteem and confidence decline, along with their motivation to continue their studies. They may lack positive role models and, at times, even support from their families. Some young people have to prioritize work over education in order to help support their families. Girls may also face pressure to marry at an early age and start families. For a young person from a disadvantaged background, even a single obstacle can become a turning point.
Support from Multiple Sources
We know from experience that these obstacles come from many different directions. That is why our support focuses on several areas.
We provide our scholarship recipients with:
- reimbursement of education-related expenses,
• individual support,
• a safe space where they can spend time.
Without financial assistance, continuing their education can be difficult and, in many cases, impossible. That is why we cover the costs associated with their studies, including transportation to school, school supplies, textbooks, vocational training materials, and boarding school fees.
Individual support means providing encouragement and assistance during challenging periods when it can be difficult to stay motivated. When needed, we accompany young people during their first days at school or vocational training, and we provide tutoring and counseling.
At the same time, we create a safe space for young people in our regional Clubhouses. There, they can study, chat, play board games, or take part in group activities. Each young person comes to us with a different story and different needs, so we strive to provide support that is tailored to their individual situation.
