Mattresses, Pillows, and Blankets for More Than 260 People in Need in Lebanon

The humanitarian situation in the Middle East continues to deteriorate due to ongoing conflicts. In Lebanon alone, there are currently more than 800,000 internally displaced people. Many were forced to flee their homes with little warning, leaving behind their belongings and basic necessities. They are now seeking temporary shelter in schools, community centers, or with relatives.

More than 320 schools have been converted into emergency shelters. However, these facilities are overcrowded and not suitable for long-term living. Many people cannot access them at all and are forced to sleep in abandoned buildings, cars, or even in large tombs in cemeteries.

The situation is especially critical for vulnerable groups—children, the elderly, the sick, and pregnant women. Limited access to drinking water, food, hygiene supplies, and healthcare increases the risk of disease and worsens overall living conditions. At the same time, people face immense psychological stress and deep uncertainty about the future.

Among the hardest-hit areas are southern Lebanon, including the city of Saida, and the southern suburbs of Beirut, particularly the Dahiyeh area. Between March 8 and 10, 2026, one of the largest waves of displacement in the country’s modern history occurred, forcing more than 200,000 people to flee their homes.

The situation is further strained by overwhelmed infrastructure. People are fleeing in panic through severe traffic congestion, where vehicles barely move. Journeys that would normally take 20 minutes can now last up to four hours—time that can be critical for their safety.

In the city of Saida, in cooperation with our partner IHR, we carried out our first distribution of aid at a collective center. We provided mattresses, pillows, and blankets for more than 260 people, primarily women and children. For many, this was their first moment of comfort after days on the run.

At the same time, a rapid needs assessment revealed that access to food is currently the most urgent priority. A community kitchen is already operating at the center, and we are supporting both food procurement and the preparation of hot meals.
